a portable fence stile

I needed to get to the other side of the fence easily. And this is an electric fence with a lot of pop! And other folks want to get in and out easy to spend time with the critters. Fooling with the electrics led to people forgetting to put things back the way they ought to be. So I need something easier than fooling with the electrics, so folks won't be temped to go that way. And it has to let people get to the other side, but not critters.

And this fence is portable! So whatever I make needs to be able to move around as the fence is moved.

I spent some time with pencil and paper and threw out the first four designs, and then .... I made this ...

portable fence stile

portable fence stile. "Stile" - I had to have somebody tell me what I invented. While this might be the first portable stile, there have been lots of stiles in the past.

The idea is that you stuff your foot into the triangle and hold on to the vertical stick to help keep your balance. Then swing your other foot over the fence and stand on the piece of wood that sticks through the fence. Very fast! Very stable! And it is easy to drag around wherever your current electric fence is.

Here is my daughter demonstrating how to use this portable fence stile about three years later

thats a great idea! never heard the term before. I like to pick up peoples old pool ladders  to use as easy portable fence hoppers. most of the time they just give them away. is that electric fence or is it just the lighting that makes it look like poly rope? I have never seen field fence style electric netting.

Yes, its poly wire and comes in different configurations.  We use it in our browsing business.  We use one that has every other wire grounded because the goats hooves insulate them from the ground in our dry summers. So by touching 2 wires, one positive and one negative, they still get a shock.
  I like the stile-think I'll build one.

thank for the info. I didn't know there were so many options now with the electric fencing.

paul- is it turning out to be fairly stable? did you do anything to preserve the wood or is it made of a species that weathers well?

I did not treat it.  Just just 2x4's and 2x6's I picked up really cheap.  Three years old and it looks like it will last forever.

You should have a gentle man helping a lady of the stile victorian style in the pic, it would be fun anyway it woudl help to really see the stile being used but it is not really necessary. What about some lowerable wheels on it. Is it for men? the spaces between step and step seem a bit big.

I started an Appropedia "stub" page on portable fence stiles  - stub meaning that it's just a couple of useful links and a very brief intro to the subject. It would be great if anyone was inspired to add to it, so it can grow into a full and detailed article. Just click "edit" and add - you don't even have to register!

Here's the article: Portable fence stile

Sorry to dig up such an old post. I am interested in creating one of these, but am not very handy. I don't suppose you have measurements, etc?  Thanks!
