(First phone call 4/18/19)

Client: Phoenix Male DIY Welder
Site: Rocky desert, flash creek/street, little slope, 1 acre, South Phoenix
Desires: Rainwater cistern, Life peak house, shop, basement, edible landscape, thermal convection, greenhouse, detached shed, unique metal-work opportunities, future shop footprint, use local materials (including earth), bridge cranes,

Questions: 1) How many planned occupants? 2) How many baths? 3) What roof sheathing type? 4) Please provide your sketches via email.

Answers: 1) 6 Live in max. 2) 3 full baths and maybe a guest one in a greenhouse. 3) metal with radiant barrier. 4) to scale sketches of a few layouts were provided.

Update: The Client called me to share bad news. This project is still important, but his immediate work shop situation was going to have to change very soon, and this project must be put on the back burner. I too had a few things arise, so the feeling was almost mutual.

Project Status: In a Design Development stage

Questions: 1) Do you see any outliers in this image of your property's layout? 2) What do you think about the outdoor spaces? 3) What are your ideas for the facades?

Update: I focused on the slope of the land because the client wanted to invite some of the water that flows along the street curb. In doing that, I placed the large building composition up hill - separating the concrete basement from the land that will take on a lot of water. The building composition is simple right now as I plan to design for natural air flows/exchanges, then massage it a bit further from there depending on the client's desires. I did these drawings by hand to get a feel for the scale of the site and to better design the proposed topography.

Project Status: In a Design Development stage

Questions: 1) Any outliers? 2) Concerns? 3) Can you see your work flow within this shop's orientation? 4) May I design custom beams to spread from South extent to North extent?

Questions: 1) Expense budget in relation to above ground materials? 2) What portion can take-on the West? Space/mass is so large something will get the blunt of the West sun.

1) which way is north in the diagram? ( ahh, it's in the first picture )

2) depending on the kind of metal work ( chromium, sanding, grinding, welding, etc ) . It might be good to get the food (green house) further from the contaminants.

3) The garden is rather far away from the kitchen / way out of zone 1, so it will not see as much use/care as if it was closer to the home.

4) is the pool natural or chemicly treated?

5) where do the water tanks go?  ( a big pool is going to need a _lot_ of water storage to make up for evaporation )

6) solar hot water?

7) how does power get into the property?

8) at 1 acre, the property is about 150' x 300' or so?  is that right?

1) North is downhill. Correct, it is shown in first image. 2) Type of metal work and location of plants to not contaminate is a good call. Thanks! 3) Make sure of kitchen garden. Thanks! 4) At this rough stage, this pool was planed to be chemically treated. 5) Water storage at top of property (south side). Plan for evaporation - Good call. Thanks! 6) I don't think he was planning for solar hot water. 7) Not sure which direction electricity underground will enter the property. Good question. 8) 155' E to W, 300' N to S.

The Client canceled the project. (Summer 2019)

The Client re-opened the project with an altered design request (and a more urgent timeline). (Spring 2020)
