in the august 2008  issue of Scientific American there is an little blip on "DEET beaters"

"the neural network then scanned a library of roughly 2,000 untested piperidines, compounds related to the active ingredient in black pepper that can ward off insects"

it went on to imply that some form of these compounds last three times longer than deet. I have heard of people trying to use hot pepper spray in their garden. is this where it got started? would a black pepper sprinkling in the garden give us an edge in an area with an insect issue?

It probably doesn't cost too much in bulk (or from the Dollar Stores), so it would certainly be worth a try.

I was just reading that a cream including the active ingredient of pepper, capsaicin, seems to help skin ulcers from various causes, including bedsores and leprosy.

(Just thought I'd throw that out there -- I can't easily work it into just every conversation!)

garlic and lemon grass oil have some insect repellent qualities to them as well. the essential oils from the piper nigrum fruit (black pepper) do also have some repellent qualities. i am curious what the most efficient process is for using these. straight pepper or do the oils have to be extracted. i do know that the black pepper would deter any curious four legged animals.

I am wondering that too. I wonder if I just boiled the heck out of some ground black pepper and then used the water if it would work. or if just using it straight would be just as effective

sue that it good info. even in modern times it can be difficult to treat some wounds. sugar is also supposed to be excellent for hard to treat wounds as well as maggots.

hard to work that maggot thing into conversation too . thanks! wouldn't have had the opportunity without your tidbit!

If you have any outdated pepper spray (for muggers, stray dogs or bears), now you know what to do with it!  STAY UPWIND, though.

But you can buy black pepper oil from aromatherapy places. I wonder what the dilution would be?
