location, location, location

I'm looking for a place where I can experiment with homesteading -- buildings, aquaculture, solar power, livestock & more in a remote area. Prefer high-altitude mountains. The main requirement is a place where I can live and experiment without permits. I just want to be left alone by TPTB.

I'm told there are still a few places left that allow people to be free. Any recommendations?

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but I was house-hunting a few years back. The area was Elk Mountain near Scranton PA. It was extremely remote. The realtor told me that most people in the area have snowmobiles because the side roads don't get plowed much in the winter.

I asked her about zoning requirements because I wanted to have a retail business on the property. She just looked at me, then laughed. "Zoning!?! There's nothing like zoning here--do what you want!"

I didn't end up moving to that area so that's all I know. PA tends to be highly regulated but there seems to be pockets of freedom yet.
