Figs and Mulberries are extremely easy to clone. I usually see folks performing air layering like you asked about.
Personally I just cut off a twig in early Spring and shove it into the gravel of my aquaponics system. As soon as it
roots out and starts to put on a little growth I pot them up. I have had almost a 100% success rate for figs, mulberries, goji, rosemary (maybe 75% on that one/worst), sage, meyer lemons, etc.
Just be sure not to leave the figs an mulberries in there too long as I once did a brown turkey twig (about the size of my pinkie) in early Spring and left it in there for the Summer. It hit the roof of my
greenhouse (4ft) by around July or so. Cut it back a few feet. By Early Fall time... each armpit had turned into a new branch... and EACH branch was again hitting the roof! So much so that it was pushing the tree over as it grew. Went to pull it out and put into a half wine barrel and the
root system had claimed all of the gravel for it'self. AKA it was a PAIN. I ended up butchering it back and ripping off a lot of roots. It went into shock for the Winter but bounced right back by next Spring. It now is about 8'Tx 6'W at the in-laws house (in ground) 2 years later. Put out a good amount of fruit already too.
My mulberries take a little longer to get going... however, once they do, they are little rockets.
The Goji is just as easy. I slipped in another 4" cutting mid Summer this year and it already has about 6 to 8 branches that are about 2' to 4' long each. I will pull it out in a few weeks and put into a pot for the Winter. Putting it out into the ground next Spring.
