Anyone ever heard of such a thing? I’m not positive it would even be practical. The thought only occurred to me because I’d love to have a smoker built by my own hand and maybe something a bit different.

Hi Scott;  Welcome to RMH'S!
There is a rmh smoker built by Matt Walker at Pauls home.
However it is not self feeding. I have heard it works well , as does most things Matt builds. I imagine others may have built one as well.

Using a rmh as a smoker, is at cross odds with itself.   RMH's  are designed to burn clean & hot ... no smoke...  a  smoker kind of wants well... smoke... low & slow.

I use a real wood smoker at my home. A lot. It is my preferred method of cooking!   Not a rmh just a hardwood fire in a barrel.   Generally I want a burn temp around 250 F for roasts and meat loafs,  Large potato's smoke up so good you'll never want one from an oven again!
Now when i'm smoking cheese, it becomes very hard to try to keep a fire under 80 F . Much hotter and you get very tasty melted cheese.  I doubt that Matts smoker being a rmh will opperate that low.

The idea of a self feeding rmh is a dream of most folks who build one.   The reality is, I only know of one that has been made.  That one uses pellets in a greenhouse. I also believe an early version of it started a fire...

We recommend innovation around here.  Build something and see if it works.  I suspect like most , you will give up on self feeding.  But I'm sure you can build a rmh smoker without auto-feed.
Good luck with your experiments ... your on the way to becoming a Rocket Scientist!

You make a good point. I had forgotten a lot of what you said about the heat and clean burning of a rocket stove. Thanks for reminding me of the qualities that aren’t quite right for a smoker.

Look! I laid an egg! Why does it smell like that? Tiny ad, does this smell weird to you?
