hugelhole experiment (aka less lawn more food)

Two years ago a hugelhole was created. The beginning is documented here.

Last year sweet potatoes were grown there. Some volunteers returned this year. As did the calabrese. Each winter it had a thick pile of leaves & chickens to shred the leaves & drop fertilizer as chickens are prone to do.

Today more sweet potatoes were planted. The soil seems very good now. There's still some logs & wood chunks underneath. Some of the wood is exposed & needs to be covered up. That's what old cow pies & leaves are for, right? The comfrey is considerably larger & has been divided several times since day one. Today I added a piece of chain link fence for critter deterrence & to use as a trellis. Planted a tomato at each corner post. There's a small patch of beets in the corner between 2 comfreys. This year it will also be planted with a variety of pumpkins & melons & corn & squash & some beans so it could be interesting to watch the lawn get overrun with food. Or not. We shall see what happens!

Love the idea. I’ve placed my comfrey in the middle with four tomatoes around it. Chop and walk away.
