Old tires

What do we think about using old tire to plant in? Does anyone do it? For food or ornamentals?

Personally, I think tire planters are not pleasing to the eye, no matter how there are dressed up.  But I would not be concerned about planting ornamentals in one.

Food? No thanks. There are enough concerns about offgassing and leaching to give me pause. I think there are better ways to contain the soil. My 2c.

I like them when used for ornamental cascading vines or plants, this way the tires get covered and you can stack them as high as you want. It also solves another issue if they get direct sun exposure, specially in hot climates or periods, cause the rubber can get extremely hot and damage the plant’s roots.
