Hügelkultur Bed

Can I dig down 3-4 feet into the ground and layer my logs with soil to make a Hügelkultur bed? The place I want to put it can’t be 7 ft high, so I’m trying to look at other ways to do it.  Thank you for the advice!

That’s exactly what I did. I wasn’t very diligent with packing dirt back in so I’ve sank about a foot or so but overall it’s working very well.

Good to know. Thank you!! What do I do if I don’t have soil, more dirt than anything? Plant lots of plants that will eventually create soil or worst would you recommend?

Use the dirt for inner layers but try to use some quality soil for the outermost layer. If you just don't have any good soil to use try growing things like comfrey & buckwheat & legumes & other things like that which will eventually improve the soil if they are chopped & dropped in place. Earthworms, manures & compost will help too.

yes. we did this very thing on a small scale. we dug down only a few feet and ended up with a nice level bed. we grew tomatoes there and they did very well!
