planting a food forest in an established grove of trees

Most of the information I've seen on food forests seems to start from scratch. Is it possible to plant a food forest in an established grove of trees? I have a small area with mostly mature oaks, and I'd love to use this area for growing more food. What would be the best way to approach a setting like this?

This my situation as well! I’m looking forward to the responses you receive… My biggest concern with the oaks is the enormous amount of shade they cast. I know there are some plants and trees that like shade (pawpaws in my area, as an example), but do I just plant everything else on the south side outside of the shade canopy?

I was wondering the same.  It's more difficult to dig and transplant into a spot where tree roots are already growing, but with patience and extreme care not to injure the roots, it can be done.  I've successfully dug and planted flower bulbs around trees.  For starting a food forrest around established trees, my main question would be, where can I find information about pairing food plants with specific trees, (companion planting).
