Does anyone know where I can buy a goumi ‘sweet scarlet’ plant in the uk? I need one to pollinate my goumi plants and I can’t find anywhere which sells sweet scarlet in the UK. Most of the EU growers don’t export to the UK anymore because of Brexit.

Or any company in the UK, or which delivers to the UK, that sells any varieties of Goumi plants. I just need something that will pollinate the Goumi plants which I already have (they are the species not varieties).

As a last resort I would consider seeds, but I don’t really want to wait that long!!

Hi G.

You may be surprised but I often find the RHS to be useful for finding plant suppliers.

They came up with a few of my favourite suppliers:

https://jurassicplants.co.uk/products/elaeagnus-multiflora-cherry-silverberry?_pos=3&_sid=a919a19f1&_ss=r

https://www.korewildfruitnursery.co.uk/largeShrubs.html

https://www.agroforestry.co.uk/?s=Elaeagnus+multiflora&post_type=product

also one I've not used:
https://larchcottage.co.uk/?s=elaEAGNUS&post_type=product&type_aws=true

Most seem to be out of stock at the moment. ART are the only one who list the variety you want. Martin does tend to selll out quite quickly - best get on his mailing list so you can get in early next year! He has some really good named cultivars of fruit and nut plants, but only in limited quantities.

It's possible I may have a seedling or cutting of Goumi (not the cultivar you were after though - any wouyd do as a pollinator). Goumi doesn't do well for me here, I think my summers are a bit cool, but they should do OK for you further south. I'll check today and let you know if it is a possibilty.

am i reading right that you have multiple species (seedling?) goumis? unless they’re all cuttings of each other, they should all be pollinating each other just fine. am i missing something in the question?

I have two goumi seedlings, both of the species not cultivars. I bought them from the same supplier at the same time, and I assume that they are cuttings or seeds from the same parent.

I read that they will be pollinated much better by a different variety, do you think they will pollinate each other?

If they are seedlings they will pollinate each other, if they are cuttings, then they will not. They may set a few fruit anyhow, but you will get a better set with an unrelated plant. https://permies.com/t/47277/Elaeagnus-multiflora-Goumi-fruit gives a discussion. Also a cultivar may have been selected for better tasting or size fruit.
I have checked and I don't have a spare Goumi plant at the moment, sorry.

Thanks for the link.

I contacted the supplier and they confirmed that they are seedlings and will pollinate each other, so I won’t bother buying another variety unless they really don’t fruit much.

and you can always get a stick from a cultivar to graft on to one of your existing plants if the need arises for better pollination.

It's always worth keeping an eye on Martin Crawford at Agroforestry Research Trust in Devon. They don't seem to have goumi right now, but here's what elaeagnus plants they do have: https://www.agroforestry.co.uk/?s=elaeagnus&post_type=product

We have bought many plants and seeds from them over the years, including 3 ebbingei shrubs and one 'autumn olive' (umbellata
