Hello family! Im in need of someone's eye who's experienced in water retention planning and/or earth design. The land I'm on has zero structures on it right now and therefore I want to take full advantage of designing the most applicable water plan for it. The contour lines look a little wonky, though I would like to believe I have identified my keypoint (white arrow) and the ponds cascading below it (black arrows). I plan on doing a keyline swale and maybe some more every several yards descending the first one and keyline plowing in-between. The blue circle is at the very bottom of the property where a bigger pond would be placed. By no means is this a complete sketch up but I wanted to check if I even have the right idea.. Does this look like it is headed in the right direction? Also would you recommend using some swales as roadways or access points? or just put roads on contour?
I appreciate anyone who has some feedback. Mulch Love
Hi Mitchell,
Welcome to Permies!
I've added your post to a few forums to get extra eyes on it. Unfortunately I don't have experience to help you - it looks to me like you're heading in the right direction.
What sort of gradient and rainfall have you there? What are your hopes for the property longer term?
Hope we can get some good discussion going for you!
thank you very much Nancy! the land is no more than a 2% grade if i were to guess, its smooth rolling hills so it can be a bit misleading when looking at it.. I am in central Utah & believe the annual rainfall is less than 16 inches, that's according to information i've gathered online. Long term hopes for the property is to become a closed loop farming system in addition to sufficiently living off the land with my family. thanks again for adding my posts to some other forums. (:

Hey, Mitchell! Since you posted back in 2022, what did you find that worked?
It sounds like you were headed in the right direction.
I am not sure swales on roadways would work though to me, berms work....
