Can someone tell me more about this tool? You can see that at the end is a scythe looking blade. It is also advertised as a hay scythe, or something like that. Would we be able to use it like a regular scythe? Our grass is very high at this point and I would really rather not get out the lawnmower for it. So I've been looking for a scythe in our area and this is one of the more affordable ones that came up. I'm just not sure if I could use it for the purpose I have in mind.
Thanks!

Annie,

The pictures is small so I don't have a good look at it.  However, it looks like a scythe with a grain craddle attached to the handle.

Yes, it can be used as a regular scythe.  The attachment is simple to catch the plant as it falls over to be placed in a windrow at the end of the stroke.

It's a grain cradle, used in the harvest of cereal grains. It is NOT well suited to general scythe use and I would put away all thought of doing such with it. The technique intended to be used with such cradles was up off the ground, and grass is much more difficult to cut than ripe grain. The long and open-set blade will cause all manner of trouble if you try to use it as a regular scythe, and you will probably end up damaging the blade, the cradle, or both.

Thank you, Jack, thank you, Benjamin, for your replies. It looks like it is a wonderful tool for what it was made for... cutting grain. Too bad it's not for grass. It sounds like I may have grown rather frustrated trying to use it for that purpose.
