This problem occurred for me a week ago when Flash updated itself with a new version. Not pertaining strictly to this site but I saw a comment on one forum here where a user said they could not play video, so I'm posting the fix that worked for me:

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes#w_solution-2-downgrade-to-flash-10-3

Download the two short files, run the "uninstall" to remove the newer flash version and then run the "install" to set up the older version. Need administrative privileges to do this in windows; haven't run FF in Linux or Mac yet, don't know if there is a problem there or not.

I maintain about two hundred PCs and laptops. I get this problem a lot. The easiest way I have found, and it doesn't necessitate down grading the plash player, is to download from the direct source. I have it saved on a flash drive along with the one for adobe reader. If you Google "unable to install Adobe Flash Player" it will give you helpx.adobe.com. In there you will find this link http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/support/install_flash_player.exe. This is the direct download source for the Flash Player.
This is the direct link for Adobe Reader, which tends to do the same. http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Sounds like the right way... Except the download of the latest from the Adobe site (after the update Adobe pushed out direct last week caused the problem to begin with) didn't work. When I get time I might try the dl from macromedia, but meantime the previous version seems to do the trick. I guess whatever enhancements they make don't affect the video cuz it all looks the same (when it works at all) to me.

I have a theory that it is the web page that the updates come from that causes the problem (the one with the checkbox for McAfee or whatever that you have to un-check. Whenever I use the macromedia link, I don't get all that and it installs cleanly.

To Rufus Laggren: You are a LIFESAVER by posting the Flash problem solution for us Firefox users!! Prior to finding this post, I tried EVERYTHING, including uninstalling and reinstalling Flash SEVERAL times!! NOTHING
worked...............until I came across your suggestion. And now, everything is working GREAT, just by downgrading to an older version of Flash! I had even thought of doing that, but couldn't find any older versions
on the Adobe page. I know your post is several months old, but hopefully you will come here from time to time and read this grateful "THANK YOU" for taking the time to post your solution!! Many blessings to you!!
