I bought some rugosa roses from Rain Tree nursery a few years ago and they finally made fruit, after a successful deer cage upgrade, but the fruit was not very big, just dime-sized. Is it because I am not good at growing roses, and they are sad and unwilling to make big hips? They are planted next to the compost and get lots of sun, water and banana peels. Or do I need a different cultivar? The leaves do not look like the rugosa roses I remember from coastal Washington either, which is where I've seen truly great rose hips. Those rugosas had shiny, waxy, crinkled dark green leaves, and mine are paler green, less waxy, almost dull, less crinkled and somewhat smaller, with a differenly toothed margin.

It was also my understanding that rosa rugosa produced large hips.

Which rugosa varieties did you purchase?

This thread:

I know rugosa Hansa is famous for big tasty hips. I just ordered Sevillana (red) and bonica (pink).  What about other shrub type roses that are both repeated bloomers and hip producers? Any recommendations?

My reply gives a link for some really delicious-looking rose hips:

Therese Bugnet, Blanc Doublet de Coubert, and Hansa, but it was from a different nursery, oops! White Flower Farm, I will edit my post. Thank you for the great article link! In addition to dozens of varieties to look into it has pruning tips:

"Tips for hips:

Select roses with single, semi-double, or otherwise cupped-bloom form.
   Stop pruning around September 1st.
Provide adequate irrigation with good drainage.
Encourage pollinators, like bees and other insects, to visit your roses by creating a naturalized edge or hedgerow.
Allow blossoms to fade and fall off of the plant naturally."
