Sepp on antibiotics/chemicals in manure

In the new book, Sepp speaks of adding manure from other local farmers to improve soil when starting out making high beds. What are thoughts on that manure coming from farmers who use antibiotics/hormones in feed, or chemically sprayed crops given to them? Should there be concern about this leaching into the soil? I know over time it would dissipate, or be consumed by micro organisms but should that input be avoided entirely? or is it of little concern altogether? thanks!

Do NOT use this manure at all. You do not want any antibiotics, hormones, or chemicals in your beds. These are persistent chemicals that burden the soil and food it produces. Sepp is very careful that he does not get anything from a farmer that is using any chemicals, antibiotics, or hormones. He says if a farmer is spraying his fields, or in this case using antibiotics on his animals, then he will not get anything from that farmer.

great, thanks, that is what I was thinking. If chemical farmers are your surroundings, is there recommendations to just use cover crops to build soil for the long run, and not use manure or would you have to truck in manure from a distance to help create the beds?

Use the soil and materials that you have on site and sculpt them as best you can. Adding the increased texture and surface area will help balance the water household. Green manure and soil enriching crops are the best way to build the soil. You will be amazed by what can grow on "poor" soil when you start working with nature.

Be careful with any thing you don't know the source of. Legitimate composting companies trying to do good have been burned by persistent herbicides in material that they composted and then sold to others.
