In this YouTube video, Reid demonstrates the process of creating a compound mallet at Wheaton Labs. Compound mallets are made from two separate parts: the handle and the head. They are useful for kindling, crafting, and other tasks like pounding stakes or assembling items. Reid explains the importance of using greenwood (freshly cut wood) for the head and dry wood for the handle. As greenwood dries and shrinks, it creates a strong joint with the handle. Reid uses a moisture meter to measure the moisture levels in the wood before shaping the pieces with a rounding plane. After rounding off the edges of the head, Reid creates a hole for the handle to fit in, assembles the mallet, and plans to shorten the handle as needed. The video concludes with an invitation to discuss compound mallets and homesteading.

Nice mallet!  I have a mallet with a rubber head, and one that’s all wood.

Very handy tools, and it will be fun to make my own with different length handles, different weight heads, but….

what makes this a compound mallet?

Ha ha, I guess I told on myself!  I hadn’t watched the video when I wrote my question.  Both my mallets are also “compound”.  I just never saw the other kind before.
