This is so true. One is better to buy one pair of $500 shoes that will last 10 years than one $100 pair a year over the next 10 years even though it seems cheaper up front.

I have to concede though that it is not always easy to identify the real quality option from the poor quality overpriced one.

I find tools to be the same way. I've got old world farm tools that will outlast anything I can buy at the box stores. Some of them cost more and I had to make my own handles but now they will outlast me.

I buy most of our clothes, including shoes, at thrift shops. It's the only way I can afford high quality stuff. You have to know something about fabric and clothing construction, but that applies to everything, or you won't be able to spot a bargain.
