Hey there,

I just bought a piece of property and I have prevailing winds from the Southwest.  I am looking for affordable ways to create a windbreak in the Southwest corner of my property.  I have a chain-link fence that goes all the way around my property and I was considering purchasing a cloth screen to use as a windbreak on the fence (like the image attached).  Does anyone have any experience with this type of windbreak cloth?  Any ideas other than bamboo and a fedge for windbreak?  I don't have the option of terraforming.

Thank you for the feedback!

I have used that successfully, wire ties are better since some of that cable ties can be rubbish and do not like the sun.
I often used stainless steel ones outside.

Thank you John.  And did you find the mesh screen to be effective for mitigating winds to some degree?

So my garden is kind of on the side of a hill with the north side open into infinity (or at least a mountain in Alaska 15,000 miles away or something). Lots of wind.
I have that exact material stretched over a fence on two sides, West and North. "L" shaped.

It basically sucks.

Windbreaks don't seem to work unless you have enough spacing to create a pocket of still air. I looked into it once and there is an actual formula for this. In my case of it being only a 25x25 foot spot with the fence right up on it, the wind might be getting reflected over the garden but it just sucks the air from the garden along with it. So I cannot effectively tell if it does any good as far as reducing the effects of the wind on my garden.

Forgot to add: I am currently trying to grow a windbreak to replace the tarp, leaving a gap of about 20ft where I can to create my wind pocket. Jerusalem Artichokes, Rosemary down low, Cedar trees. Junk like that.

dan seems to have a mega problem!
i found it ok particularly if i gave it somewhere to deflect to.
Also having it leaning back at the top allowed the wind to go over.
I do the same with me sheds I deflect the wind over them away from the walls and have
the skillion roof facing the prevailing wind so they dont get blown off,
it works well.
Sometimes windbreaks work better if some wind can filter through.
