Community in North Dakota

Hey y'all~

Throwing out some feelers here, imagine this...

You're in North central North Dakota, 10 minutes from the Canadian boarder and 3.5 hours away from the nearest million population city. There's an airport 1 hour away and a Walmart 40 minutes away, but you don't need it because you live on a 950 acre organic commercial farming community.

There is a 1,400 sq ft geodesic greenhouse capable of feeding 20+ people, a huge garden, fruit orchard, berry patch and medicinal labyrinth. Not to mention, there is a huge dam lake which gives incredible views year round, but also a private clothing optional swimming pond.

There are multiple families living on the land, all whom share similar values around sustainability, sovereignty, land stewardship, raising and educating children, harmony with nature etc.

There are multiple businesses within the community which you would contribute/benefit immediately.

There are existing homes on the property which you could rent to own or purchase. Or, land plots which you could build on with your own money or borrowed money from the community.

We prioritize harmony and growth, there are individual and group opportunities for conflict resolution and personal growth.

In the winters, you and your family would have the option to migrate to our sister community in Hawaii.

-Family oriented structure
-Long term residency
-100% Organic and local foods
-Chemical and toxin free
-Shared resources and income

Since this place is in the middle of nowhere North Dakota, there currently isn't much for activities in the wider community. The Turtle Mountains are nearby with thousands of lakes and trees. The property is currently surrounded by conventional farms which we hope one day will transition to organic with our influence.

We want to open a cafe which would create more of a wider community reach, we also sell at the local farmers market currently.

If you've stuck with me this long and you think this is something you'd be interested in, let me know! We are still at least a year away from actually inviting someone to live here...

I am just gauging interest, like does anyone even want to brave the -40 winters here???

I am surprised that no one has bothered to respond to this.  I guess the old stigma about North Dakota being a frozen wasteland still hangs on.  i had an uncle that lived west and a little north of Rolla, and he used to take a day or two and we would go fishing at the lakes in the Turtles.  Very overlooked area, which is no doubt fine with the local folks.

I grew up in a colder climate, although not as severe as yours, but having lived in the south I am looking for a more realistic place to settle regarding climate.  it is nothing if not miserably hot and humid in my area now.  Time to head out.

Your setup is interesting and i would like to learn more of what you have going on.  I carry a lifetime of practical work experience and would enjoy being able to put it to good use in your sort of community.

Do you heat that greenhouse, and if so, by what means?  

I have been looking at this site for a long time, and actually joined years ago, but life got in the road.  it happens.

Wasn't North Dakota one of the only states to keep a state bank during the Depression.  A lot of states are starting to consider following its example, from what I gather.  Looks like a fine project!

There will always be that cut of the local population that wants to see population growth in order to increase commerce and the resulting tax base.  But there will be a large swath of locals as well that are just fine with a state population remaining just under 800,000 (density, ~10 people per square mile) especially as around half of that total population is found clustered in Fargo, Bismarck, and Grand Forks.

Aloha, where in Hawaii is your sister community located?! I am on O'ahu & currently looking for ag land to live off grid & space to mill. We own a tree service on island currently have the 3 youngest of our 7 kids on island with us. My husband is a TRAQ Qualified ISA Certified arborist & does a majority of the production climbing for our business. We are looking into options to live in nature & disconnect from modern society. I'm ready to leave the rat race of this society. You work hard and at the end of the day it feels like you've accomplished nothing. I want to be a part of something that at the end of the day I feel a sense of accomplishment and harmony. I'm proficient at carpentry, anything mechanical, plumbing, basic electronics, gardening and agriculture. If I don't know it I'll admit to it, but be sure I'll learn it.

i have been a general and electrical contractor for many years, and now have only interest in sustainable food and permaculture although i am willing to work in trades to support a community.

Hey everyone, I feel a sense of relief knowing there may be people in the world who would want to create community here.

I see so much potential here and there are resources available to make it all happen.

There would be an opportunity for a small family or a couple to come and visit next spring to get a feel for it. Ideally someone who is just as invested as creating community and belonging somewhere.

The "community" would start small, with slow and deliberate action to co-create together a sustainable foundation.

I haven't been on here in a while but I am in your general area, it is so great to see people into permaculture 'up here' with the mono crop farms!! I own property but would love to work with like minded people on projects for sure. Wondered how it is coming along since your last post.
