Thoughts on .com vs .ca vs .org?

That is a subject that might be better suited for CodeRanch, but well, this is for a permaculture website.

I am wondering if there are benefits of naming a website permaculture-blablabla.com vs its counterparts in the .ca or .org. This is going to be a website specific to Canada so I thought .ca would be appropriate.

Anybody has any thoughts?

If it is Canadian centered there is nothing wrong with .ca. You won't get as much organic/Google traffic from Google.com with a .ca as a .org or a .com but if you don't care about US traffic then it's not an issue.

It is easier to make a .com brandable than a .org or .ca. If the .com is available but you like .ca or .org better, buy the .com and forward it to your main domain. You'll always have people who will type in the .com regardless.

Buy them all if they are not stupid expensive. If you don't buy the .com someone else can brand pirate you really easily.

Good point!

Not too worried of brand pirating since it will be a local group, but I will probably take the .com and .ca least.

It may have more to do with the way you are branding your product.
.com is basically commercial.
.org is basically orginazations not readily selling things.
.Ca Is Califonia as far as I am aware.
I could be wrong.

There are times you can do cute things like make words that end in ca. mec.ca would be my favorite example. Is ameri.ca in use?

mec.ca is actually in use by mountain equipment coop (the equivalent of REI).
