Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster! I have been absolutely fascinated with food forests for years. I finally bought a home on just under an acre of property in zone 6b misdouri on the edge of a large creek. The creek floods into my yard once or twice a year and there are some low spots in the yard that take a day or two longer than the rest to dry up. Also, mostly clay and this year so far just letting whatever grow that decides to grow looks like a lot of clover and native wildflowers. As soon as I moved my boxes into this partial rehab, I got diagnosed with cancer. It's been a year and I'm eager, while still fighting, to get some things going. With that said, I have virtually no budget and while I have tons of time to research, I'm honestly at a loss with chemo brain. I had a plan all mapped out about 10 years ago but my brain is just not working like it did then. I would love some help to figure out what the heck I can plant here and come up with a 5-10 year plan. My overall goal is to obviously provide cleaner, healthier food for myself but also provide fodder for the baby animals that breed on or near my property and once the output of the forest has outgrown my appetite, provide nourishment for the local community which is one of the poorest counties in missouri. I also have an additional half/one acre about 15 miles south of me that I originally intended on doing this on but am having to sell to survive. Thankfully it is to people I trust and once I am back on my feet, I will be able to get it back but have full access to plant any plants that are to much for this property. That is also on a river edge but is currently half forest at the river edge and half full sun, weeds, and hard rock. If anyone can give suggestions on making sure this soil will work or on inexpensive to free plants/trees/cuttings to start with, all help would be appreciated. I can take photos or videos if anyone needs those as well.
