A few of my avocado trees have frozen. I have a feeling they're green inside and could bounce back. How tough is this to do for a tropical plant like an avocado? How well do avocados recover from being frozen? The freeze was not as harsh for them given that it was in the greenhouse...
I sure hope so, my greenhouse is a really sad, sad place to be right now.
It depends on the variety, some avocados are more frost tolerant than others. Here is the more authoritative word than my dim recollection of avocado groves that I have seen hit by frost. And the important advice from this resource: No attempt should be made to prune or even assess damage from the frost until spring when new growth appears.
I guess we wait for them to wake up in a few weeks and then we see how bad it was.
My three potted trees made it. Everything that was above ground was a total loss, but they are coppicing back from the base. Call me pleasantly surprised and duly scolded so that next winter I will do more to protect them from Old Man Winter's wrath.
I think my fig may have suffered the same fate. We had a really bad coldsnap this winter out west too. Not as long a one as y'all out east though. Best of luck and condolences.
