Lewis Dartnell & The Knowledge - wood gas stove

Hi All,
Lewis Dartnell is a UK Science Communicator who has recently written a book called "The Knowledge", about how to reboot civilisation in the event of an apocalypse. I haven't read it yet, but he has this little item (video) on how to build a gasifying wood stove. I have some issues with his materials and technique - I think a classic TLUD (which this is a variant of) works much better if lit from above. He also incorrectly calls it a rocket stove (or perhaps this is a valid use of the term?). Thanks Burra - my own view is that we shouldn't have to wait for an actual apocalypse to start introducing some of these good ideas where appropriate Much cooking on open fires in the "Third Word" contributes to respiratory disorders, house fires, deforestation and other problems, and small cheap stoves like these (and proper RMHs of course) are potential game changers. Plus they generate biochar, which has its upsides and its downsides, but in hot dry countries, is potentially very useful, and fuel is abundant (even dried animal poop).
