Hello, I really enjoy life in the forest, and after a while I decided to invest in a Tentipi tent so I could stay outdoors all year round. Despite the product’s quality, I found it quite expensive and eventually sold it to build an improved version myself.

This DIY model is a reinforced version of the original.

It features thicker fabric and mountaineering-grade hardware.

The whole project was made using two vintage Singer sewing machines: a 96K industrial straight-stitch machine and a 15B domestic machine fitted with a zigzag attachment.

I’m sharing the full build tutorial here. It’s in French but includes a lot of photos : DIY Tentipi

The main tips for making such a piece are as follows:
- Tipi fabric is stiff, almost like cardboard, and has no elasticity, so the cuts must be precise.
- A mason’s line is very useful for marking large cuts.
- The large size of the fabric makes it too heavy to be pulled through the sewing machine. You either need to suspend it or rig up a kind of slide to help feed the fabric more easily.
