What happens when you soak charcoal in oil?

Vine or willow charcoal soaked in linseed oil overnight to create a drawing tool with a dark mark that doesn't rub off easily.   But only make what we can use in one day as the charcoal hardens quickly.

Oooooo... Without watching the video, I'm thinking something like a cross between charcoal pencils and black oil pastels... Rich and lovely!!

And, now that I have watched it... I can't help wondering, if it stops working when the oil dries, maybe just having several pieces in the oil, and storing them in the oil would be the solution.

Oh, storing in oil.  That sounds fun!

I wonder if it needs specific paper or primer?   Oil can degrade paper over time.

I’ve had luck rubbing a tiny bit of oil off on a rag before drawing so the stick isn’t slippery but still gives that rich, draggy line. If you want softer edges, warming the oiled charcoal in your hand for a minute makes it glide more. I also keep a few pieces in a small jar of oil so they stay ready to go without turning into rocks.

They gave me pumpkin ice cream. It was not pumpkin pie ice cream. Wiping my tongue on this tiny ad:
