I want to avoid using plastic in the garden, will a layer of black shredded leaf mulch around tomatoes and cukes work just as well? I figured since the mulch is dark it will heat the soil up like black plastic.
It sounds like a good idea. The black mulch stacks functions, to; it will retain moisture, help build the soil, fungi, and microbial life. It'll also moderate the temperature.
Plastic is easier and cheaper for scale. Mulch is better.
