We’re looking for a mason or hands-on builder interested in coming to Alaska for a paid CMU pavilion build near Talkeetna.

The pavilion is a commission by Soon Foundation, a small nonprofit arts organization developing site-specific work in Alaska. It was designed by Marc Leschelier, a Paris-based architect and artist who works with concrete, masonry, stone, and other ordinary construction materials. His work leaves the building process visible, so the materials, methods, and marks of construction become part of the finished piece.

The pavilion is approximately 20 × 30 feet, with curved masonry walls on a concrete foundation. We’re hoping to find someone with hands-on CMU or masonry experience who is comfortable working from construction drawings and solving practical problems as they come up on site.

We know this is an unconventional place to look for a mason, but Permies seemed like a good place to find someone practical, independent, and excited by an unusual build.

Foundation work is scheduled for September 13–20, 2026. The above-grade CMU work will follow, with some flexibility around timing. This is paid work, and we will also cover travel, lodging, meals, and local transportation.

I’ve attached examples of Marc’s previous work, images of the pavilion design, and a photo of the site. Please reach out if this sounds interesting to you—or if you know a builder who might be a good fit.

Interested builders can send me a private message through Permies with their location, availability, and a brief description of any CMU, masonry, concrete, or similar building experience. Photos are welcome but not required. Questions and referrals are welcome in the comments.
