might be a 'groundwart' ?

The closest I can come to identifying this mushroom is a a 'groundwart' thelephora terrestris....not edible just interesting. I only saw one on a fairly wide path through our woods so I didn't bring it home. got pictures, though. any other ideas?

Taking a spore print would be a really good idea. Do you have any charts or ID books?

we use the Peterson field Guide and have a couple others to cross reference........there was only one so I wouldn't cut it for a spore print although that's what I would usually do...the book says that it would be a 'purpleish brown' spore print. and it's apparently not anything edible so I'll just enjoy it's ruffles on my walk

Being on the ground and not on wood ruled out other possibilities...it is pretty distinctive.

I just happened to think maybe i could do a spore print in place if I slipped some paper under the mushroom and lidded it......have you tried that?

I haven't but sometimes you can see the light dusting on lower stems or caps.
