Hi
Not sure if this belongs in Chickens or Compost forum
Is it safe to put bedding which may have red mites in a compost pile or use as mulch away from where the chickens could access? Or would this risk reinfecting the coop? Thank you

My understanding is that red mites are a parasite. They feed on animals, using their blood for nutrients. I would feel comfortable putting bedding infested with red mites into a compost pile at a distance from my livestock. I would want it to be a hot compost pile that is turned to help eliminate the mites that might be in the bedding.

I agree with Timothy about the hot compost.

It is better to use the finished compost to mulch your plants.
