We have one of these, which is very nice. It works by sweeping back and forth, and inside, a brush rolls along, sweeping the debris into two spaces which can be opened and emptied. It is small, light, makes little noise, and is as effective as a vacuum cleaner. I think it is a good low tech option for cleaning floors, carpets, and even (as I tried today) raised surfaces that might otherwise be difficult to sweep.

I a pinch, I have used a brown to sweep the carpet it is affective, too.

A carpet sweeper probably does a better job, though.

I have one of these too. I love it. I gotmy current one withmy house. The modern one I had didn't hold up half as well as the one from the 80s.

Another non-machine option is a rubber broom. Hair that's deep in carpet fibers will cling to it. Mine also has a squeegee side for spills on hard floors.
