I was wondering whether anyone in California has attempted to have chickens on their national forest property or maybe any National Forest recreational property. We have a cabin in a recreation area with lots about 1/2 to 1/3 acres each and I don't think anybody has attempted to raise chickens there during the summer but interested in attempting to bring out chickens up for 3 months of the summer. Possibly bees too. Any ideas?

Howdy Scott, welcome to permies.

Will you be there the whole time to watch over the chickens?

Do you have covenents about keeping animals ?

Will the neighbors be OK with it?

well i am a little fuzzy on all the details but in my understanding, in california there are provisions for people to run animals on national forest land and even on other peoples properties if they border national forest land (like just about everything out here in the north does).

so people who have goats, cows, etc can roam around the forest grazing them, and even onto other peoples properties. the latter probably only happening accidentally, but if i am correct here, it is technically allowed. i would assume this also means it is ok for you to have chickens there.

Thanks for the answers.. I need to find even if our local NF recreational cabin area has a set of rules that even address this issue.. A bit afraid to even ask.

as far as watching over them.. my idea was bring a chicken coop trailer to the cabin for summer only that would be secure at night and during the day they would be contained in a small portable fence area daily so I would be there. Also I think the neighbors would be okay with it.. It seems like lots of ranging goes on in FS lands anyway.. but this neighborhood chicken thing might be new! IF you can point me to any existing FS policy that would be great! We can have pets no problem so chicken pets?
