Just got this link today.

Pitcairn, a small remote paradise-like island in the South Pacific is running out of people. They are giving land for free to people who want to settle there. Could it make a good Ecovillage location?

Pitcairn would benefit from the complete replacement of the existing culture. About a third of the men have been tried for rape or other sexual crimes. Most girls are pregnant by 13. Fourteen million was spent on trials in 2004. There were 47 inhabitants at that time. I'll go, but only if 100 others go as well. I'd have to be made king. Heads would roll.

They are granting land "on a leasehold basis" but without charge. That's perhaps quite nifty, but it's not quite "giving land" inasmuch as we don't know details like the terms of the leaseholds.

The culture there is very toxic. Whether or not this is related to the island's history as a place where mutineers and other undesirable mariners would be deliberately marooned is hard to say at this great remove of time and distance.

It still could be a fun adventure for somebody young, male, and utterly without responsibilities elsewhere.

An interesting Natl. Geo. article about the place.

I'm with the other posters here... I'd go but only with enough other permie people to be able to vote the existing people out at tribal council...

Seriously though I have thought about the idea of finding an uninhabited or sparsely habited tropical island to form a community. I loved living in the tropics; food production is a lot easier when you don't have winter to deal with.

Can you elaborate on that statement please. I haven't found any information to suggest that and am wondering what I'm missing.

Child rape is endemic. Google Pitcairn sex trial. Seven convicted of a population of 49.

I think if you are a single mother with 2 daughter (esp age 12) and no male companion, they will also pay for your plane+boat ticket. Due to the fact that a few of the females have left.
