I think a good woodshed will allow wind to blow directly on the wood. So you pretty much only need a roof, maybe a little overhang. Rain blowing in from the sides is okay. Yes having a clear roof would allow more energy/heat in to dry the wood, and making the area bright will also discourage fungi/mold and critters to an extend.
Iterations are fine, we don't have to be perfect
