yeah agreed, a happy medium should be struck. people tend to extremes, some times anyway, some people especially. and in that happy medium both the individual and the community benefits, not one over the other.
it seems in response to the isolation and alienation that most people are forced to live with, as its the "norm" in many "advanced" cultures, when people move in the other direction towards community and integration, they seem to go to the pendulum swing all the way too far. having grown up in different contexts we arent as prepared to deal well with community, so this tends to pendulum swing back to isolation.
and theres some kind of contrariness there too...that maybe isnt easy to grasp...like the more respect is given to boundaries and keeping own space, then the more those boundaries fade and become more flexible. if this makes sense....i do think about this a lot, having lived in a lot of community situations and dealt with a lot of dysfunctional community dynamics. but its hard to vocalize it and get it into words....
and i think that there are several different things we are talking about.... of "ownership" and several kinds of "private property"...some of them are more natural and obvious, and healthy...some of them are not. so you cant just lump it all together. like i certainly dont think property rights should be violated by the government...someones space should be their own in that respect...but that doesnt mean that property rights should include polluting and messing up what they are really just borrowing..."owning" for a time....
so i think there are kinds of private ownerships that are healthy and more natural, and that involves RESPONSIBILITY, and a person forming a deep relationship with "their land", being able to keep their private sanctuary...these to me are all more natural healthy ways of owning something, IMO humans need "own " space. but humans also need community and interaction, integration. these needs are not as opposed, as they may seem.
but when we talk about private property...in terms of someone being able to do whatever they want with land, just owning it and having no responsibility for it, no connection to it, well thats this weird illusory stuff...it is a convincing illusion, but it is truly an illusion. a power trip and a domination, this is a whole different ball of wax.
we really can never be truly separated from the larger community of life....no matter how much we dont know this....and act without respect of this fact, doing damage to the thing wrongly "owned" in that sense....
