Hi

I'm searching for land with an eye towards escaping suburbia in a couple of years and building a self sufficient retirement.  To that end I've been purchasing tools and equipment that would be needed when I get there.   It has occurred to me that a good investment would be to purchase some bareroot trees and nurture them along so I have older trees to plant when I get there.

As far as growing them, I was thinking of making grow bags 8-12" in diameter and about 2' deep.  I'm looking at about 100 trees and haven't decided how to store the bags as a group yet but thinking either building wood and wire boxes or a kiddie swimming pool  That way I can grow them out and easily transplant when I get to the land.  A give caveat is that I live in a climate with cold winters (-30C) with warm chinook winds that cause many thaws thru the winter.   This leads to a concern of winter kill.  What is the collected wisdom regarding this idea?   What can be done to reduce winter kill?

Thanks a bunch
Ken

Have you considered starting from seed?

I am considering it for some of the other plantings.  The seedlings come from a well established grower in the area I am looking for land.  I like supporting them and using seedlings that are acclimatized.
