Which edibles are immune to monkeys and baboons?

Dear fellow Permies/Comrades,

I am moving to a farm outside Magaliesburg, South Africa, and the area has MUCHO baboons and monkeys. I found the  thread on "Monkey Menace" very useful (https://permies.com/t/11411/critters/Monkey-menace) and have decided to build a caged vegetable garden. I am now wondering which crops I can get away with planting outside the cage... I know they are not interested in garlic, olives or lemons. What other edibles could I plant outside the cage??

I think Taro Colocasia esculenta is supposed to be monkey-resistant.  It requires cooking to be edible by humans.  Personally I would also try edible Canna Canna edulis and Sweet Potato (they might not think to dig it up) and Spineless Prickly Pear if it is legal to grow it where you are (some places find it invasive).  The monkeys might eat the fruits but probably not the edible pads.

First be aware that I'm not speaking from a position of knowledge here, this is all theory. But, all these animals are closely related to humans and so have similar tastes. We use that with some success to repel squirrels (who also have the same tastes) by spreading cayenne peppers on plants to protect them. If a food requires considerable processing to make palatable to humans, I imagine they would be less attractive to other apes. Then there are foods like potatoes which they would have to know to dig up the edible part of the plant, the rest of the plant is poisonous.
