You've all heard of the wagon wheel effect where wheels look as though they're running backwards.

But with modern cameras, we now have the rolling shutter effect instead. And it's kinda awesome...

But not exactly a 'modern' phenomenon.  Pre-digital SLR's also had an analog version of the curtain shutter, the focal plane shutter.  Some photographers used this to nice effect.  Jacques Henri Lartigue was one of the earliest.
