Scammer Hosts

I wanted to give my other fellow WWOFF'rs a heads up about a """""Host""""" that is nothing more than a scammer....Before I put this info on here I'm going to wait for a response because I don't want to put anything on here I shouldn't and get in trouble because I like this site A LOT! But....Am I allowed to put a warning about him on here?

A review that expresses your own experiences is encouraged.  However, saying something not nice about another individual human is a direct violation of publishing standards.

We do want to encourage honest reviews, but sometimes people find it difficult to stick to their own experiences and start attacking the individual running the place.  For example, saying "a """""Host""""" that is nothing more than a scammer." might not pass.  But saying, "this specific experience I had, made me feel that I was being scammed" would probably be okay.  


We are hoping to set up a series of review threads for different products and experiences.  

The ideal format for a review thread is

The first post describing the book/dvd/item/place/whatever
the following posts reviewing the book/dvd/item/place/whatever

If you can use "I give this ___ 8 out of 10 acorns" (or how many acorns you think it deserves) in the first line of the review, that will help us when we compile a grid like the book review grid - https://permies.com/wiki/31762/Book-Review-Grid

Ok cool thank you! Well my experience was not good with this man. He told me he helped y'all (I'm from Indiana so I try and put my accent in with my type build this place up and he's one of the Co-founders. The agreement was to stay and help for a year then he switched it to 2 months completely messing up my plans and now I'm kind of at conflict because of what he did. He went back on absolutely everything he said. He will offer 500$ a month with meals included and rides anywhere you want....would be great if he kept his word...he deducted for meals...Which out of 2 months I had eaten with him 6 times period....he deducted power usage and his well water usage.... he said this exactly....Collin I'll pay you a 500$ monthly Stipend....And all meals transport power/water usage are included....Collin are you sure I'm not taking advantage of you....NO sir! I'm here for the experience and agriculture not the money....at the end of each month...well the 2....he paid me 50$....wonder if he knows stipend means....A fixed rate of pay..LOL! Anyways I figured I should let someone know...If you need his name then email me because I'm not blasting his name on here because that's not who I am...I feel terrible typing this up but like I said...I think you guys should be aware...It's my fault though because I'm too nice and I'm a push over...But...now I'm partially scr#@$d but it's ok...I believe in Karma....Hope this is ok and if it's not please delete it.. Like i said..I LOVE this site and don't want to get in trouble...He did other stuff too but I feel like a child putting THIS on here so this is what I'll put ^^^^ lol....Thanks Guys....and yes...he said he helped build this place...a co-creator..but I'm sure his butt gets jealous because of all the poo that comes out of his mouth...

If the problem is with a wwoof'ing host, shouldn't a caution about "him" be posted on the wwoof'ing site? ...Not sure why you would post it on permies. If the host is provably to scammer or whatever other bad player, the wwoof'ing site will remove him. Problem solved.

Be very careful wwoofing on Mfangano Island, Kenya.

I got scammed there years ago, and noticed there are many wwoofing hosts on Mfangano now. A bit strange for such a small, impoverished community where even internet is very hard to access there. But my host advertised on wwoofing and other sites too. Here’s a summary of what I experienced myself or witnessed:

1. Host asks for money, because they’re poor. Wwoof hosts aren’t supposed to be paid though.

2. Things get stolen from your locked room during the day while you’re out doing your volunteer work. Host has key to your room but says he has no idea how someone could get in. Maybe you’re just imagining that your stuff is gradually going missing?

3. Host needs money for something urgent, but will have to travel very far to reach a bank. He asks to ‘borrow’ some money, but you’ll never see that money again.

4. Very short term volunteers have things stolen very quickly, like their shoes being stolen outside their room. Longer-term volunteers have things stolen at a slower pace.

5. Host invites volunteer to buy land in this paradise. Local land laws mean foreigners can’t buy land, so the land will be in your host’s name. You’re now at their mercy because they now have your mo way and full legal rights to the land. Sounds stupid but I met some westerners who had actually ‘bought’ land on Mfangano based on a handshake.

People often feel guilty about writing a negative review of a host. There are still good experiences along the way. I never wrote about this until now, and it happened to me a decade ago.
