has anyone tried using sport/fighting birds for pest control? im trying to think of a way to stack functions with rescuing these badass breeds from abusive owners, and a reason for breeding them but not for sport.

i assume they would be good at hunting rodents, and would carve out their own territories around a farm or orchard so that each area would have some protection. but then humans need to be prepared to spook em off as needed.

300 total sq. ft. intensively cultivated, hugulkultur beds, producing at over 500lbs or $1500-5k of food annually in Zone 5b.

6 chickens worth of droppings, bedding, and 3 peoples worth of food waste provide plenty of compost to keep the beds growing indefinitely.

$500 up front cost(minus reclaimed materials): includes loam and compost, lumber for building beds and chicken coop, tools, chickens, and fencing for garden and chicken run, rain barrels or buckets

$300 upkeep costs(minus reclaimed supplies): includes seeds, chicken feed, mulch and water.

Which birds had you in mind , I am assuming game cocks . Getting them to stay put without any females could be an issue

birds which excel at hunting rodents are Raptors.

The domestic? bird that does a good job is the Guinea fowl.
Chickens will go after mice on occasion but not reliably and they will not go after something the size of a rat.
