rocket mass heater

Has anyone ever tried to build a RMH outside the house similar to an outside wood hot air furnace?  Been giving it some thought to reduce the risk of burning down the house.

What kind of house do you have?  An rmh should only be a hazard if you don't insulate it enough, which cob could take care of pretty easily.  Would you put the feed and the stack outside and then run the pipe through the house?  I've never seen one done that way, but there's no reason you couldn't.  seems you'd lose a lot of your heat that way though.

I would have to build some sort of heat exchanger. I don't want to go away and leave it unattended if it is inside the house.

The idea with a RMH is to have short, hot, burns and use the heat slowly.... not like an iron stove that smoulders all the time. It is like learning to use a wood stove all over again... A RMH might only burn for 4 hours out of 24 and yet heat the space for the whole time. There is a thread about someone who did have the wood feed outside and the mass inside.... look for the thread with a yurt... I think.

Len,  i was in the same position.  I recognised the awsome potential of them but had some questions before i was comfortable putting it in the house.  I took one day and a friend and we built one in the greenhouse with ianto evans book and a lot of youtube videos.  I strongly urge you to not get disuaded by your questions of safety and take the time to experiment.  Let your reasurance come from playing with it your self.  No one else can ease concerns of safety as well as experience.  On a lighter note,  i was totally amazed by the efficiency and down right awsomness of the design.
