Fall crops in the North

well we are about 75 days from our first hard frost in Michigan (although they say we should have warmer than normal Aug,Sept, Oct so maybe longer ..last year 10/3)
Now is the time to be putting in annual seeds for a fall crop if you are in our area, zone 4/5 Michigan, allowing 2 1/2 months to maturity.

I was wondering how many people plant a fall crop in the north and what they plant, I intend to be going out before the rainy spell that is due the end of the week, and pulling gone by plants and putting in seeds of fall crops this week. I also plant greens and salad crops in my greenhouse this time of year that will provide me with greens products well into the winter, last year I picked some form of green all winter long.

I plan on growing carrots, greens, radish, peas and winter cover crops.

i have already sown my fall/winter crops under most of my tall summer crops like corn, amaranth, beans, etc... by the time fall rolls around the mother crops will be harvested and the understory fall crops will burst into grow life.

drought here, waiting on the rain forcasted (passed us by the last week and a half) and then I'll run out and get some seeds in while the soil is wet and warm...or just before if I BELEIVE the weatherman that rain is really coming.

Ive been using local radar lately and that is a pretty good indicator of when I will get rain, so I can plan 2 hours in advance which works for my scale. Im not sure if that would work for you though.

Radish, beet, mustard, spinach, cilantro, chard. Sometimes I plant the little bulbets from the garlic and the winter onion top bulbs. The mustard and cilantro will go late into the winter and some of the seeds will wait till spring to pop up early.

I am north MO - so "ya'all" probably consider me a southerner.

we live in the "northern Michigan split" ..there was an inch of rain in our forcast for today, but it split over our area again and we got a mist..and that was it.

I did however get my fall garden seeds in and am still waiting on the rain..today planted:

spinach, mesclun, lettuce, mustard, radishes, edible pod peas, green beans, summer squash, kohlrabi, carrots, and even put on some onions although I know they won't be ready this year..now we need the rain
