I want to build a test rig that I can see how effective the ceramic fiber is to insulate.     As I look at this I may just use the sheet metal to form the fiber then use the Sodium silicate to harden it for chimney, then move on to the firebox, or test it as a TLUD.

Hi Mart;  Great idea !
Lots of folks thinking of switching to ceramic fiber. This testing of yours may help with their decision.
I have just built my first ceramic fiber blanket riser. I have not finished the build yet to be able to try it  out. I used Morgan Superwool , non hazardous. I hope yours is as well.
In my searching out info about c.f. blanket, a thought was posed whether  using ridgidizer (water glass) might change the insinuative property's of the blanket ??? I do not know. You might investigate both ways.
My understanding of the ceramic boards is they harden on their own after firing.

Good Luck , keep us posted

Pic says it all.     I put rebar underneath the chimney  as I wanted something that would catch the ash .      This is burning so clean, I guess the next step is to Add hardener with the sodium silicate.

I am thinking of building in modular design so I can have either a TLUD or a J tube.

I love how cleanly this burns.

I have been useing ceramic fibre wool riser for a few weeks now, so not long term, but my fire is run for 5-6 hours at a time and I don’t see any deterioration as yet.

I think you mistaked Fox James for my work :-)     I just slapped mine together.

With a very poor setup I hit over 200 degrees in my oven  with two loads of the pipe. 1/8th inch steel underneath,  The temp was rising faster but that metal acts as a huge heat sync.    I am amazed such a crude setup worked .

I figured out that if I reduced the top of the Pipe that I got a more controlled burn and I was able to extend the time.     I was able to hit 200 degrees in 12 min  in my oven and I baked up some cinnamon rolls  woo hoo ;-)
