Oh yes crafty, upon looking around the site, I had the same experience as compostme-same ol' s--t---send money.  I should have stopped after just listening to the song too. LOL  There is much to buy, t-shirts, etc, and information to help us figure out what to do with our wayseer -selves.  Really, I got the feeling that it was geared to the lowest common denominator-those who are simply rebellious and like having a title for themselves.  Still, I took those words to heart and in sharing with a most unique and enlightened young man, felt it contributed to his understanding and appreciation of what is so different about him.

Compostme you are entirely correct, pragmatically speaking, unfortunately.  The emotional response I had listening to it, more than watching it, however, was sincerely and utterly personal, without regard for anyone else's intentions.  A 13 year old boy to whom I forwarded it, has been listening to the song, the words, every day and loves it.  Again, regardless of the realities of marketing, it serves, for him, as a personal validation of his "differentness".  I noticed, too, that there is a monthly fee to join and then I can be bombarded with emails about practicing my wayseer-ness.  I appreciate your comments for their value in keeping me grounded, but I sure do love those ecstatic moments, wherever they originate.  Did you feel it too?

Wow, thank you so much for that.  I know 2 more people who need to see this.

Where are you located Raindog?  Even if you are not nearby, how 'bout some details about what you are doing?

RZA continue to post about what it is like for  you.  I liked reading what it looks like and feels like.  Emerson, the friend who said the good stuff got burned away is just not correct huh?  I am exprapolating from this thread what to do about the lava rock I'm dealing with.  I believe it is good stuff, just needs time.  The smaller particle size of the ash is probably important.  Now I'm wondering if this ash has properties similar to green sand.  That too is from the volcano.  Of course, the color would indicate different mineral content.

What minerals does the ash provide?  Does the content of the ash vary from place to place?  Do lava and ash have similar content?
RZA are you aware of previous ash deposits in the area you garden?  Has it been fertile for you?

This thread seems related to a question I have had about lava rock.  In my area in the Northwest homeowners sometimes buy red lava rock for mulch instead of bark or compost.  I understand that volcanic soils are fertile so I wonder if the lava rock, which is already in place, will provide favorable conditions for the garden beds I'm building on top.

Thanks for introducing me to Hugh!  What a fun and informative show.  I have to warn about episode 7 where he brings home the blood from his slaughtered pigs to make "black pudding".  I'm afraid I had to click off at that part.  Besides the interest of the show itself, I have a fondness for British entertainment in general.

By keeping my eye on my overall goal, which is to be food independent, I jump right to "how do I have food through the winter?"  And wouldn't ya know, the very factor that supplies one thing also satisfies the other-doing the gardening to get the food to save through the winter.  I am a true believer that pest problems are the consequence of weak plants.  Having high Bx soil would make every bit of growing better, probably more drought tolerance as well.

Adding seaweed to kraut is a great idea-it's so very nutritious.  Does it serve a purpose in the kraut making?  And I would deliberately use one that remains visible, that would add interest.
