Wheaton labs meet to discuss the next stage in creating Gertitude at Allerton Abbey.
It's time to start planting so five hugelcultures are to be built in front of the Abbey as soon as possible, protected by a junkpole
fence. More
boots are expected soon, which
should accelerate progress.The access area is currently too steep to push a wheelbarrow up. An aggressive re-grade would provide materials for constructing the hugelculture and leave a gentle slope and a garden area. The uphill side of the wofati needs to be a
water collection area, which complicates the design as water needs to kept away from the structure.
Paul wants 7 ft high hugels with gently sloping paths and flat stones along the top ridge, which becomes a pee-platform to provide fertiliser. Steep paths would be off-putting. 7 ft wide paths would allow access for garden carts, which are wider than wheelbarrows. They discuss the pros and cons of having the hugelculture beds the same height and thickness all the way along, or having them change as they move away from the abbey. Should the tops be level, regardless of the slope around them?
Paul wants a jungle-look as you look out of the abbey. Jen is concerned that she doesn't want it to feel like living in a hole, but thinks that steeper hugels might be worth experimenting with. A wofati really needs to be built on sloped
land if the material needed for construction is to come from from off site, otherwise you need to dig ponds to provide
enough material.
