Summary
Paul sits back down with Kyle from
bootcamp to discuss door latches on buildings like the
shower shack and Allerton Abbey.
The doors on the
shower shack are on their seventh version, with the door being held closed simply by magnets when unlocked, and a 1 by 4 plank of
wood functioning as a lock. In front of the lock, there’s a hole in the door that gets blocked off when locked, so peeping Toms have a harder time doing their thing whilst simply showing if a shower is locked or not. Standout feature seems to be the magnet latches that magically keep the door closed, and they’re being replicated on more doors now.
Two years ago, Katie was at the ATC and wanted to be able to tell if someone was using Willow Bank without having to walk all the way up there to see if it was occupied, so she rigged up a blue glove to the latch so that when it’s closed, it pulls up a blue glove (now been replaced with a small flag) that can be seen from the bottom of the hill. Note that it’s not tied to the door, but rather the locking mechanism.
Allerton Abbey door weighs just over 200 lbs, so it takes a bit of effort to open, which Paul really likes to the point that he wants to install even bigger doors in the future. He relays a tale of a door he saw in a community in Washington that was made of railroad ties, 8 inches thick and 9 feet tall, that didn’t even budge in storm winds thanks to it’s sheer weight. Finally, he goes on to plot making even larger, hobbit-house doors that continue what the Allerton Abbey door started, although they may involve solid steel cores just to hold them together.
