Summary

The call between Paul and Alan Booker continues, and they still don’t get around to discussing section 2.4 of Permaculture a Designer’s Manual by Bill Mollison, AKA the Big Black Book, instead continuing to talk about Biophilic Design.  They’ll definitely get around to it in the next part.  Honest, guv.

Modern suburban design is so land inefficient that Alan claims that he can re-pattern the layout in such a way that any house can be within 5 minutes’ walk of both wildland and a rich community hub, while also allowing each household to produce around half of its food, and all without using any more space or costing any of the luxury of conventional design.  Once such a design is put into use, then people will see it and start wanting such designs for themselves.  This is how to get people to be interested in the idea of Biophilia and permaculture, by simply exploiting capitalism.

Taking a look at a site called Climate Trace (linked below), you can view an interactive map that shows where greenhouse gasses are being released, and if you select filter > CH4 (methane), you can see where your nearest landfill is just from the amount of methane it’s spitting out.  Considering how much ecological damage methane does, and how useful it is for fuel, Alan has been working with a group called the Living Building Challenge to modify their rules to allow for combustion, as this rule excludes both bio-digesters and rocket mass heaters.  His logic being that proper use of bio-digesters for methane can be substantially better ecologically than electricity for some purposes such as cooking.  To their credit, they have recently decided to have a conversation about amending this rule after Alan started badgering them about it.

A quick clarification to the summary:

The Living Building Challenge is the world's most rigorous standard for sustainable and regenerative building design. There are only a little over 30 buildings in the world right now that are certified to the full LBC standard. The group that maintains the standard is the International Living Future Institute.

I would be happy to help out with the ILFI discussions regarding methane and biomass.  I think this is an area of the standard that needs a different lens.  I have worked on multiple Living Building projects including the Bullitt Center,  Kendeda Building, and the PAE Living Building.   All three of these buildings were designed with compost toilet systems.  The PAE Living Building has a urine diversion system that can generate fertilizer.
