Paul discusses the red cabin RMH with Uncle Mud. It's the 5th RMH in the red cabin.
#1 was the minnie
mouse which is now in the love shack. It lost too much heat: from 78°F down to 60° overnight. Paul and Mud brainstormed ideas to improve it and it now has a
cob hat, which was unexpectedly effective, now the overnight temperature drop is 2.2°
#2 was the cyclone which looked good but wasn't efficient.
#3 was a 4" J tube built to find out if 4" systems could work. It took too long to get a clean burn and was hard to clean.
#4 was the gamara which had issues heating a cabin: you need easy starting and fast heat output as the cabin gets cold when it's empty.
Currently #5 is a standard 6" J tube design. Initially built with a firebrick riser, which is cheaper and easier to make. Andreas finds a picture of it, which Mud says Paul wasn't supposed to see as it has duct tape. There's some joking about duct tape.
This was replaced with a 6" molded fiber board riser as the stove wasn't performing well. The change made it better but the problem was that the barrel was only 16 gallon (testing tiny house designs) so there wasn't
enough space around the riser. This was replace with a 35 gallon stainless steel riser which solved the problems.
Paul lists things he would still like to improve:
* gain temperature faster from a cold start
* reduce overnight heat loss to max 4°F
* stronger draw (although it's already pretty good)
* better cold plug resilience (important in a cabin where it gets very cold in between uses)
Mud would also like to try a firebrick riser in it now that the barrel is bigger (the firebrick riser is a bit fatter than the molded one)
Paul has thoughts on cold plug resilience: making the mass less efficient could lead to faster heating of the flue and so easier starting. Also noted that in the fisher price house, having the kitchen fan on can mess with the airflow.
Mud feels the less efficient mass will lead to too much heat loss overnight. He would rather make a better priming port.
