part 1 of a 3 part podcast.
Site overview and Steven part 1
Paul talks with Steven and Clay at the labs during labor day weekend.
They talk about the upcoming harvest week, and the rocket-boosted
solar dryer. Paul thinks they will grow about 20% of calories for
boot camp this year and Steven thinks that's realistic. Steven feels they need to start more plants from seed indoors to improve productivity.
They talk about how the lab is developing into a permaculture theme park of sorts, and Steven mentions Roy the new hybrid pickup which was bought by a benefactor. Paul talks about how when he lived in the
city there was constant sleaze to deal with.
Paul asks Steven and Clay about how they wound up at
wheaton labs.
Steven says when he was in his 20s he heard about off grid living and such and he discovered Paul's work at the labs maybe 12 years ago on kickstarter, but at the time he was busy with a worky job paying off college debt etc. He lived in Baltimore city and biked to work which he said was a good thing. A key moment in deciding to leave the city was getting hit by a car while cycling to work, so in 2022 he quit the worky job and came to the labs, initially as a
sepper but then joined boot camp and stayed for 2 years, now he's high commander and committed to helping wheaton labs succeed. He relates how he's recently been making jam and apple sauce.
Clay lives in Boise Idaho and has a worky job downtown but since he lives outside the city limits he has about half an acre where he can keep
chickens and do permie stuff. He came to the labs as a sepper, also attended this year's
PTJ and now is back as a sepper again over labor day weekend, chasing some BBs. He and his wife live mostly organically but there's still stuff he can't do at home. He has plans to build an
RMH and would like to keep cows.
Both of them have listened to a lot of podcasts and Paul feels that people who listen to podcasts before coming to the labs mostly are a better fit.
