Summary
part 2 of a 3 part podcast
Paul continues his chat with Steven and Clay about
wheaton labs and
boot camp
They talk about how they cope in summer and winter. In summer it can get hot but they have slushies! Also they find indoor projects to do in really hot weather and at events they have an aluminum trough with
water in for people to splash in, the water is refilled daily and used on plants and
trees. In winter, again, there's inside work but Paul says it rarely gets crazy cold and with the right preparation you can work outside. Steven says August at boot camp is nicer than being in the
city.
Paul talks about how it's soul-feeding to look at projects and jobs that you have completed, Steven agrees and says that taking on new things tests you and expands your life. By comparison much of what is done in worky-jobs is more ephemeral.
Paul also compares boot camp with the
WWOOF program, and says each have their good and bad points, but he feels that boot camp is probably better for many people.
Paul describes the BEL program which has replaced BRK and has just been overhauled. The program rewards people making posts about their
experience: The program has a pot of money and for every 100 posts you make in your BEL
thread, you now get 10% of the pot.
They now move on to discussing who is likely to come to boot camp.
Clay says in his view people who do well have a healthy dose of give-a-shit and are willing to crack on and do things that need doing. He also says boot camp is what you make of it. He's there for BBs and for the SKIP program, doing BBs he can't easily do at home.
Paul says some folks come to escape from the world or their life. Steven (with his high commander's hat on) says he doesn't want train wrecks. He wants people who are keen to contribute to something bigger than themselves. Paul puts in a word for the train wreck people, sometimes they come and turn their life around and become good permies. Steven says he's happy to welcome people whose life has gone to shit, provided they leave the shit behind, they can grow and make a new life.
Paul comments that they do have pretty high standards at boot camp and people who don't fit in tend to leave pretty soon.
